EXPLANATION:
Wall Street analysts issue buy and sell (and hold) recommendations on the stocks they cover. The chart we present shows the percentage of total recommendations that are buys and those that are sells. The rest would make up the holds.
GUIDELINES:
This typically works as a contrary indicator, with an extreme number of buys versus sells being a "sell" for the market and vice-versa.
However, the passage of new legislation in 2002 after the debacle of conflicted analyst ratings during the internet bubble has possibly impacted this indicator and we may not see the ratings go back to their historical ranges.
